Create a gift wish list for yourself and your family to get a good handle on your needs and wants. Also, it makes answering the question, "What do you want for your birthday?" or "What do you want for Christmas?" way easier to answer. Birthday wish list. Christmas wish list.

When someone asks you “What’s on your birthday wish list?” or “What do you want for Christmas?” are you completely stumped? I know I always have a hard time answering that question.

It’s not like there aren’t things that I wouldn’t love to have. I see things in the store, and I think about maybe buying them later. But, I usually end up forgetting about them.

Why?

Because I don’t need them, and I didn’t want them enough to remember them.

So, when someone asks me what I’d like to receive as a gift, I usually don’t have an answer.

And, even when someone is blatantly asking me, it’s hard for me to ask for things. I don’t know why – it just feels really awkward.

Plus, I’m trying to cut down on the amount of “stuff” in our home.

To solve this problem, this year I’ve been trying something new.

I created an Amazon wish list for myself, and for the members of my immediate family.

You can do the same thing by logging on to your Amazon account and clicking on the “wish list” graphic to create a wish list.

Anytime someone in your family mentions that they’d like something (a toy for your sons, a gadget for your husband, etc.), you add it to their Amazon wish list.

If you notice that your kids will be needing new snow pants next winter, you can add it to their lists.

Anytime you see something you think would like, you can add it to your own list.

When you add something new, you can go back and look over the list to see if it’s still an accurate representation of what would be good gift options for your family.

Especially with little kids, needs and wants can change quickly.

I’ve been surprised at how many items I’ve ended up deleting over the course of the year.

As the holidays are approaching, I’m hoping that this will make things a little easier.

If someone asks for gift ideas, I’ll be able to give them a link to our Amazon Wish Lists.

If you don’t feel comfortable sharing your list, you don’t have to.

Even if you never share your list with anyone, making the list can be a neat exercise in examining your needs and wants.

Amazon is easy to use, and almost everyone feels comfortable making purchases through it. It might even save people time by not having to go shopping for as many gifts.

What would you add to your wish list?
