Doing laundry is one of those chores that never goes away.

Even when you’re caught up, you know that tomorrow there will be more laundry waiting for you!

But if your laundry room is cluttered, disorganized and messy, doing laundry quickly becomes something you’ll dread and put off.

This article will walk you through the process or organizing your laundry room, and give you some practical laundry room storage ideas you can use in your own space.

Laundry Room Organization

A well-organized laundry room can make the chore of doing laundry much more pleasant.

If you’re struggling with clutter, dust, and little space to actually do laundry in your laundry room, it’s time to remedy the situation.

Evaluate Your Current Laundry Room Organization

Before you start, take stock of what’s working and what isn’t.

Here are some questions to ask yourself:

  • What keeps your laundry room from staying organized?
  • What’s working well in your laundry room right now?
  • Are there any items in the laundry room that should be stored somewhere else?
  • How do you want to use the space? How would you ideally do your laundry – daily, weekly, something else?
  • Are there any organizational tools you could use that would make your laundry room easier to maintain?

Laundry Room Organization Ideas

Everyone’s laundry room organizational needs are going to be different, but here’s some steps we’ve taken to keep our laundry room organized.

Use a laundry sorter

Of all the tricks I’ve tried, this one has saved me the most time.

We have a 3-bag laundry sorters that we use for whites, colors, and jeans.

Everyone knows where to put their dirty clothes in the hampers.

I keep one laundry sorter cart in the laundry room (which is right next to our kids’ rooms), and one in the master bedroom.

Laundry Room Storage Cabinets or on Shelves – Store Like Items Together

Store like items together in your laundry room so you can see how much you have on hand.

Try to keep a backup container of detergent, stain spray, etc. so you aren’t caught without the supplies you need.

Use clear containers to keep smaller items like clothespins organized and easy to find.

And, every laundry room needs a change jar!

I like to use the extra change I find to treat myself to a coffee or an ice cream every once in a while.

Keep Surfaces Clear So You Have Space to Fold

If you can fold laundry right out of the dryer, that’s the best!

But you have to have a clear surface in your laundry room to be able to do it.

If you have items cluttering the top of your washer or dryer, find a new home for them so you can use that space.

Folding laundry right out of the dryer saves so much time, and it usually eliminates the need to iron anything.

Plan to Make Your Laundry Room Organized

The laundry room is one of the few areas in our homes that no one’s interested in visiting.

Yet, it’s a space that needs to be functional, otherwise no one has anything to wear and chaos ensues.

By creating a well-thought out organization plan for your laundry area, you can set up the space so it almost runs itself.

By setting up good laundry routines, and creating a solid plan of action for organizing your space, your laundry room can be one of the most organized parts of your home.
