Do you have larger items that you need to declutter? Are you unable to remove it from your home by yourself? Or, are you just wondering where you can take larger items that you need to get rid of?
Here are some ideas for figuring out how to declutter large items:
How to Declutter Large Items
- Post it for sale online, and include buyer pickup as a condition for the sale. This way, you get rid of the item, you make a little cash, and you don't have to move it. If you're unable to move the item by yourself, make sure that your buyer brings someone to help out. Always remember to be safe when having strangers come to your home.
- Donate the item to a charity that will pick it up. Call around and see if there are any charities that could use your item. If it's in demand, they might even be able to pick it up at your home.
- List the item on Freecycle or in a Buy Nothing group. Just like when you're selling an item, be careful about having strangers come to your home, and make arrangements for extra help with moving if necessary.
- Call your local waste management provider. They may have some local options for getting rid of larger items.
- Hire a service to pick up the items. When we did our last move, we knew we didn't want to bring our old, enormous TVs with us. Although we tried to get rid of them using the methods above, no one wanted the TVs. We ended up having 1-800-GOT-JUNK pick up the items from our home. We had to pay for the service, but it was worth it! We truly could not move the TVs on our own because they were so heavy, and we needed to get them out of the house we had just sold. We use a local auction place that have auctions weekly. We’re sorting now to have a load for them to come pick up. If you can’t move heavier pieces on your own, they might move it completely from it’s current location but be sure to ask first. If you have the space to gather smaller items you wanting to get rid of, it’s more convenient for auction house employees to move from garage or close to a downstairs door.
That’s really neat! I never thought of asking an auction company. Good idea!
Great tips! I’ve always been curious about 1-800-Got-Junk, and hearing about your good experience just makes me want to try them more. I hate to admit this, but I’ve been walking around a huge, old tv in our bedroom for months! My husband and I could barely get it out of the armoire and on to the floor without killing ourselves. Sounds like 1-800-Got-Junk might save the day for us! 🙂
We were happy with it, although it does seem like a bummer to have to pay to have something that used to be so expensive removed!
We got rid of 90 concrete landscaping blocks, 20 pounds each, in a day by listing them free on Craigslist. I was amazed. Ditto for a gas grill that was so dilapidated and dirty I was embarrassed. We probably could have gotten some cash in both instances but we were happier just to have them off our hands.
It’s amazing what people want sometimes! Glad you were able to get rid of the stuff. 🙂
We’ve put out a n old bookshelf,in good condition- just very bulky large aquarium on the front lawn with a sign FREE.
Last week hubby finally put out the bbq which had burned out burners on the lawn and it disappeared the same day
These are so many helpful tips! Breaking up spring cleaning into to do lists can help you accomplish everything. If you are not careful you could end up with a house full of junk and not even realize! So it is always good to plan your work and work your plan so as a busy mom work gets done!
